My Story…

My name is Michele and I have Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer.  My journey started in 2021 when I was diagnosed with early stage Invasive Lobular Carcinoma.  I had a double mastectomy and was put on Tamoxifen.  In June 2024, I was diagnosed metastatic when my cancer returned and spread to the pleural lining of my right lung.  After having my right lung drained eight times, I had an indwelling catheter placed in my chest which I was able to drain at home.  After six months,  I was able to have the catheter removed.  I was considered NEAD (no evidence of active disease) at this time, however, it was discovered that my cancer had also spread to my bones and stomach.  All lesions were considered healed so I was still NEAD.  I am still on my first line of treatment and I am thriving.  Some days are harder than others, but I am still here...fighting, thriving, advocating and fundraising!!

ABOUT METASTATIC BREAST CANCER

Metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is stage 4 breast cancer, for which there is no cure. Globally, more than 670,000 people die each year from MBC, with more than 43,000 dying each year in the U.S. alone (117 per day). Metastatic breast cancer spreads mostly to the bones, liver, lungs, and brain, causing MBC patients to be in treatment for the rest of their lives—with only 31 percent of MBC patients in the U.S. living longer than five years. Approximately 30 percent of early-stage breast cancers recur as stage 4 MBC. While 98 percent of all breast-cancer-related deaths are from MBC, less than 13 percent of overall breast-cancer funding is currently allocated to researching metastatic breast cancer.

METAvivor has been able to award over $41 million to fund 230 MBC research grants. We are extremely passionate about raising money for this cause and truly thank you for helping save lives by participating in or fundraising for this event.

WHAT IS #LightUpMBC?

#LightUpMBC is the world's largest visual representation of awareness for Metastatic Breast Cancer and largest fundraising campaign for METAvivor. The global campaign partners with over 300 landmarks across every U.S. State and many countries around the world to illuminate in the MBC awareness colors of pink, teal and green on October 13th, MBC Awareness Day. That evening, #LightUpMBC Live is a dynamic virtual event that serves as the centerpiece of the #LightUpMBC campaign, bringing together the metastatic breast cancer (MBC) community and its supporters for an evening of storytelling, inspiration, and impact. This live-streamed program features powerful stories from MBC patients and their families, musical performances, and appearances by special guests who amplify the mission of raising awareness and funds for MBC research. For more info on how to watch, get involved, or view the list of participating landmarks, please visit www.LightUpMBC.org
